What is Friends of the Desert Mountains?
Over 30 years ago, a group of local citizens formed a nonprofit dedicated to land conservation in the Coachella Valley. They've protected over 50,000 acres of conservation land through education, research, and other programs in partnership with local and national organizations.
What kind of activities do they offer?
They organize some of the most popular annual events in the region including the upcoming Twelfth Annual Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival scheduled for March 2, and their main annual fundraiser each fall.
The monthly calendar is also full of weekly hikes for a wide range of interests and abilities, along with parties, lectures, and more. You can see bighorn sheep, take iPhone photography classes, and learn about the natural history of Palm Springs and environmental issues affecting its future. Many of the events are free although donations are much appreciated. There's a monthly Desert Mountains Arte Faire too where you can support local artists working in many different mediums and find unique gifts and mementos to take home.
