Despite the images that outdoor festivals conjure up in our minds, not all of them require being baked alive in the hot summer sun of Southern California. The Palm Springs Pride Festival, one of the largest and longest-running festivals in the region, takes place in early November, but still has all the things people love about summer fests: food and drink, art and music, people watching, live entertainment...and lots of fun!

Palm Springs Pride officially takes place on the 5th and 6th of November, but many other related activities occur during the week. On the serious side, and all the more poignant with recent tragic events, is the George Zander Candlelight Vigil and March, held on the evening of November 1. A memorial in honor of all victims of hate crimes, the rally is an inspiring way to promote the message of love and tolerance. On the lighter side, you can kick off the festival by going to OUT PSP, held the evening of the 4th. Restaurants, bars and beverage providers from around the Coachella Valley come together for an amazing food-tasting event with all proceeds going to the Pride's organizations.

The Festival itself is almost too large to describe, with multiple beverage gardens and food vendors, as well as artists of all descriptions. The Festival also boasts 150 exhibitors and non-profit organizations. Of course, what's a festival without entertainment? Several music stages are set up throughout the downtown area, showcasing more than 120 performances. There is also a dance tent and a block party on Arenas Rd. For more family-friendly activities, the Pride also has an arts, crafts and games-based Children's Headquarters as well as the Youth Zone, a great place for the younger set to relax out of the sun. And don't miss the parade held on Sunday, November 6th in downtown on Palm Canyon Drive starting at 10am!

Best of all, admission to Palm Springs Pride is FREE and the proceeds go towards some amazing non-profit organizations. Not only is your trip there going to be a blast, but you're also helping to foster pride and respect for the LGBT community all over the world. More festivals should be this amazing.
