The Annenbergs realized their eventual vision for Sunnydale, which was to turn it into the "Camp David of the West", where US legislators, presidents and international leaders could meet on peaceful, neutral ground in a warm, welcoming setting. Sunnylands has hosted such dignitaries as President Ronald Reagan, Queen Elizabeth, and President George H. W. Bush, among many others.
The nine acres of beautiful gardens are open to the public; the gardens are created to resemble an impressionist painting - Olive Trees by Van Gogh was used as the inspiration. You can enjoy over a mile of walking paths and discover over 50 different plant species that were arranged so their look varies by the season. Relaxation is encouraged with reflecting pools, a labyrinth, geometric plant grids, flowers and shaded areas.
Sunnylands Center is a 17,000 sq. ft. building where you can find out lots more about the estate and its architecture. You can also view selections of art that include sculptures from notables like Giacometti, Rodin and Arp along with other exhibits. Check the website for upcoming special events that include such things as Films on the Great Lawn, lectures and family workshop programs.
You can tour the estate on your own or schedule a guided tour; either way, a visit to Sunnylands is truly a one-of-a-kind experience you won't want to miss.
