The Vibrant Art Scene of Palm Springs The Vibrant Art Scene of Palm Springs

During your long weekend getaway or extended vacation, you want to do something different and surround yourself with things that are both relaxing and stimulating. The arts have it all, from music to innovative ideas on canvas, all of which can destress the buildup from everyday life.

The art scene of Palm Springs can take you away on a sea of enjoyment to a variety of venues where you can explore different mediums in unique settings.

If you love theater, check out the performances at the Palm Canyon Theatre. You'll find everything from off-Broadway musicals to "thought-provoking plays", all in an intimate setting in the heart of Palm Springs. From shows like Evita and Sweet Charity to Rock of Ages and the thriller Death Trap, there's something everyone can enjoy.

For opera aficionados, the Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert has a lot to offer. One of their most highly anticipated events is the annual Opera in the Park, held at Sunrise Park in Palm Springs. A professional orchestra accompanies a large cast of singers performing much-loved arias and ensembles, drawing crowds from all over southern California. The guild's Opera Outreach introduces thousands of students to the beauty of opera. For opera's young singers, there's an annual vocal competition with thousands of dollars in winnings.

Active with permanent and rotating exhibits is the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center, appropriately located in a Class 1 Historic Site midcentury bank building designed by E. Stewart Williams. This 13,000 square foot glass building features a growing collection of drawings, photographs, contemporary art, glass works and more. Major portions of famous architects' archives are housed here, and the historically important Frey House II is part of the museum's collections.

Imago Galleries is one of the premiere contemporary art galleries on the West Coast. Besides groundbreaking exhibitions, the 18,000-square-foot gallery also has a terrace and sculpture garden. Rotating exhibits from Mauro Perucchetti's Pop Fiction, which utilizes such unique materials as Swarvoski crystals and stainless steel in a minimalistic yet unforgettable way, to works by a long list of artists including Arman, Tom Wasselmann, The Left Coast and more have graced this gallery.

There are many more destinations for art lovers of all genres and mediums in Palm Springs and the surrounding areas. Whether you're vacationing here or spending a relaxing weekend at a beautiful ModMansions home, there's plenty to do and see.
