Of course, as a visitor to Palm Springs, you know about the aerial tram, hot springs, BNP tennis tournament, and Coachella, but there's a treasure trove of lesser-known wonders waiting to be explored by the curious traveler.

  1. Moorten Botanical Garden: Welcome to one of the most Instagrammable hidden gems in Palm Springs. Run and owned by Clark Moorten, this family-owned botanical garden features an impressive collection of desert plants and trees, as well as unique sculptures and structures made from plants and recycled materials. However, the true treasure is Clark, who makes himself available daily to answer questions about cactus and succulents. Admission is a bargain at $5. http://www.moortenbotanicalgarden.com/

  1. The Backstreet Art District - Escape the mainstream art scene and experience the creative pulse of Palm Springs in the Backstreet Art District. This enclave of galleries and working studios is where local artists craft their magic. Immerse yourself in captivating exhibitions of painting, sculpture, and photography. On the first Wednesday of each month (rain or shine), enjoy the "Art Walk" event, where you can meet the artists, watch live art-making, and possibly find a one-of-a-kind piece to take home. https://backstreetartdistrict.com/art-walk-and-district-events/

  1. Tahquitz Canyon Loop Trail: This 2-mile hiking trail takes you through a beautiful canyon with a stunning waterfall. Along the way, you'll see ancient rock art and learn about the history and culture of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/tahquitz-canyon-loop-trail

  1. Sunnylands Center & Gardens - Dubbed 'Camp David of the West,' the Sunnylands Center & Gardens is an architectural masterpiece set within a stunning desert garden. The former estate of Ambassadors Walter and Leonore Annenberg opens its doors to provide a window into the history of diplomacy and art. While the house requires a ticket, the gardens are an accessible, public access point where visitors can revel in the meticulously designed landscape and wildlife. Note: Tickets go on sale on the 15th day of each month starting at 9 am Pacific time for the following month’s tours.  Open Wed-Sun, 8:30 am – 4 pm  https://sunnylands.org/

  1. The Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve - Nature lovers rejoice at Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve, an 880-acre preserve to spot animals and plants. Wander through palm tree groves, spot native wildlife, and enjoy shaded trails that respite from the sun's heat. This natural sanctuary is perfect for an educational day trip or solitude. Note: The preserve has in-season and out-of-season hours. Please check the website for updates. https://www.cnlm.org/portfolio_page/thousand-palms-oasis-preserve-coachella-valley-preserve/
